With massive amounts of data being produced every second, sifting through all that data to get to the information you want, can often be quite a time consuming task — especially if you are using standard searching techniques. However, you can mitigate this problem easily by using cognitive search. Cognitive search uses AI to help you can refine your search results, and enables you to get to the key pieces of information you are looking for quickly and more effectively.

On 6th December, 2020 me and my colleague Anam Mahmood delivered a webinar titled; “Create an App to Perform Intelligent Searches on your Data,” where we introduced the audience to the concepts and applications of cognitive search, and presented a demo on how to build a cognitive search application using IBM Watson Discovery.

The main idea behind the webinar was to highlight the advantages of cognitive search over traditional search, and also demonstrate how simple it is to build a cognitive search application using IBM Watson Discovery!

The session was kicked-off by Anam, who started off by welcoming all of the attendees and introducing them to the agenda of the webinar. She then proceeded to explain what cognitive search is, she also explained the challenges of using traditional searching techniques, and what makes cognitive search so effective. Anam then introduced the audience to the IBM Watson Discovery service, and went over some of the use-cases where Watson Discovery was used to solve real life challenges.

After that we moved on the to the next part of the webinar; which was a hands-on session on how to build a cognitive search application. This part was covered by me! I started off by introducing the audience to IBM Cloud, and showing them how they can create a Watson Discovery service instance on IBM Cloud. Once everyone in the audience had setup their IBM Cloud account and created an instance of Watson Discovery, I demonstrated how you can upload you own dataset into Discovery service, and Query and manipulate data in the Watson Discovery Service. Lastly, I showed how to integrate a ReactJS based UI with the Watson Discovery service and deploy it to IBM Cloud.

That brought us to the end of the webinar! Before concluding, Anam and I summarized the content of the webinar for the audience and shared with them links to some useful resources from where they could continue learning about AI, Cognitive Search, and much more…

The webinar was attended by around 300 enthusiastic participants who made the session extremely engaging by interacting with us via the chat panel. It was very exciting to see such level of interest by the audience, and Anam and I were extremely glad to hear all the positive feedback from the participants.

Looking forward to delivering more of such sessions in the days to come :)
